Are you getting ready to sit your EPSO case study AST3, AD5 – 9 or any other position? Here we have prepared a list of tips to ensure you have the best chance of success.

The EPSO Case Study AST3 Basics

  • Source materials: A mixture of 8 – 13 emails, regulations, articles and reports.
  • Time limit: 90 minutes
  • Skills needed: spelling, written communication, ability to structure a complete report etc.

Know What You Need To Do

This may seem a bit obvious but it is very important that you read the questions of the EPSO case study carefully to understand exactly what you have to do. If you are slightly wrong at the beginning, you will be very far from the correct path at the end. It is worthwhile carefully analysing the questions before you start reading the source materials. By doing this you will be able to know what you are looking for when reading through the text.

Make Notes Whilst Going Through The EPSO Case Study

This is particularly relevant for the EPSO Case Study AST3 as there are more documents than in other case studies. You are given a small white board to make notes on. Use it! Make a note not only of the actual content that you feel is important but also the source of it. You will save valuable time and effort by ensuring you know the material as best you can.

Plan Your Report

The length of your report should be between 500 and 1000 words. Think of it as a 2 page document. However in order to ensure you cover everything you need to you have to make a plan. The same is true with every written exercise but obviously the longer the report, the more important it is to plan it. There are generally three stages to the report:

  1. The Introduction: Outlining the basic ideas and concepts mentioned in the EPSO case study.
  2. The Problem: Here you outline the main problems facing the company/ process. In this section of the report, you have to demonstrate your analysis and problem-solving skills whilst doing so in a clear, communicative fashion.
  3. The Solution: Here you use your prioritising and organising skills in order to present a solution that will deliver quality and results.

Looking carefully at the three steps outlined above you will notice that the four key competencies assessed in the EPSO case study AST3 (analysis and problem-solving, communicating, delivering quality and results, prioritising and organising) are used. Your goal is to demonstrate that you possess these competencies through your report. This is accomplished best through careful planning.

You may think that a plan wastes time. However this simply isn’t the case for two reasons. First of all the assessors who read your report will see your plan as well. This will be counted towards your score and is a great indicator showing that you have thought about the questions before going ahead and writing. Secondly using a plan actually increases your speed overall as it gives you a path of action. You know exactly which step to take and the steps simply follow one from the other. Therefore an EPSO case study preparation plan is hugely important.

EPSO Case Study Preparation

Other tips for EPSO case study preparation include:

  • Read up about Europe so you have a good understanding of the field you are applying to.
  • Make sure you understand the mission or question, every word and minute counts and you want to ensure you know exactly what to do.
  • Practice speed-reading. This is important for everyone. By increasing your speed you will be able to work faster which gives you more time to craft the report.
  • Re-read the notice of competition as it often contains valuable information about the EPSO case study example that you will sit.

You should also be aware that there is strict security at the EPSO testing centres and you are not allowed to take any personal belongings into the testing room. Moreover, security will probably have a metal detector that you have to go through before entering the room. Due to all the security concerns it is important that you arrive at the centre in plenty of time.
